This evening we will have a songwriter in-the-round with these fine artists. Check out their info below:

AIREENE ESPIRITU - http://www.aireeneespiritu.com/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrJaiAcRrak
Aireene is a singer-songwriter based in Oakland, CA, playing mostly original songs accompanied by latin/african rhythms, folk, bluegrass pickings and inspirations from gospel music - a mix of stompin', swayin', and timeless Americana. She was born in the Philippines and moved to the United States at 10 years old, growing up in the third culture: the old country, the new country and a blend of both worlds. Her first influences in music were at family gatherings with her two uncles playing Filipino folk music on their guitars and everyone singing along to songs about life in the province, hopes for our country, love lost and serenades. As she began to write her own songs, a book called "The Land Where The Blues Began" by folklorist and ethnomusicologist, Alan Lomax, fell off the shelf right in front of her at a bookstore as if it was just waiting for her to arrive. Therein began her exploration of the roots of the blues, field recordings from the South and other countries, the voices of history, and rhythms from different regions of the world. Aireene's music is reminiscent of front porch storytelling, of ghosts and the living,
times of laughter and tears. She tours solo as well as with her band, Aireene & The Itch.

MICHAEL MCNEVIN - http://www.michaelmcnevin.com/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uSNN-nqDEU
Songwriter Michael McNevin grew up in the train town of Niles, CA in the east bay hills of the San Francisco Bay Area. Vivid songs read like short stories, full of heart, humor, and a keen eye for Americana. Accomplished guitar work and seasoned vocals underscore the characters and places he comes across in his travels. He tours as both a solo act, and as front man for McNevin & The Spokes. Michael has shared hall stages with Johnny Cash & The Carter Family, Donovan, Shawn Colvin, Utah Phillips, Christine Lavin, Richie Havens, and hundreds of others on the US songwriter circuit. Winner of Kerrville, Spokane, Napa Valley New-folk Awards. 6-time Winner West Coast Songwriters Song Of The Year. Performing Songwriter Magazine Top 12 DIY Of The Year. Winner of NARAS/WCS SF Chapter Unplugged Unsigned Competition. 3rd Place Troubadour Rocky Mountain Folks & Telluride. Music & Etch A Sketch Art Features on CBS, NBC, ABC. Michael also an Etch A Sketch artist of some renown (not kidding) - he illustrates his lyrics, dumfounding audiences with the little red toy. His drawings hang proudly in galleries and venues, waiting for an earthquake.

Nina Jo Smith - http://www.ninajosmith.com/
https://youtu.be/Mn0zBu1UQAg
https://youtu.be/jb8OwpvPA0s
Hello, here's Nina Jo from San Francisco. (Nina rhymes with China) she plays guitar and ukulele, writes songs and shares them in person, on CDs, radio and online.
Nina Jo stole her mom's guitar at about nine years of age and taught herself to play from records, the Joan Baez songbook, and the classic folk song book by John and and Alan Lomax. she kept this up for a good long while and started writing songs in high school. PS, don't worry, she returned Mom's guitar. She took a good long break while life intervened, but has been back at it for over ten years.
Global Music Awards: Silver Medals to LA Man for Outstanding Achievement in folk and lyrics/songwriting categories! (March 2016)
"I like a song that goes from the sublime to the ridiculous and back again. My lyrics are mostly nonfiction because reality is so much stranger and more beautiful." -- Nina Jo

Songwriter Serenade gig announcement

Fun! Friends! Music! Ale and Eats!

The Songwriter Serenade hosted by JC Hyke is a weekly show held every Tuesday night at Matt Denny's Ale House Restaurant & Bar.  Over 300 artists have now played the show!  It starts at 7PM and goes to 9:30.  Performers play their original songs for the audience on a lovely patio with a warm, inviting atmosphere.  There are all styles and genres of music, with 4 or 5 different songwriters each week.  The music is on a patio which is covered and has plenty of heaters for a warm, cozy evening during  the winter.   During the summer, we pull back the canvas roof and play under the stars.

Liz Ryder

San Francisco based singer-songwriter Liz Ryder is a British native whose performance and songwriting is an equal blend of traditional folk and contemporary newgrass. She is an accomplished songwriter, finger-style guitarist, harpist, and folk singer committed to keeping the folk tradition alive with a fresh modern approach.

Liz made her first folk album at age 18, and shortly after was given notoriety at festivals and on radio in the UK. Froots Magazine dubbed her, "The next in the Kate Rusby/Bill Jones Continuum," and Cambria Arts Wales said, "Liz Ryder deserves a prominent place in the new wave of British folk performers." Since then she has released three more albums, three EPs, and has toured extensively in the UK and California.

In recent years Liz has proven herself to be a serious and vibrant presence on the folk scene, and has performed at the Sacramento World Music and Dance Festival, the San Francisco Folk Festival, and on other main festival stages such as Sidmouth, Broadstairs, Towersey, Warwick and many more in the UK. She has opened for Richard Thompson, Jez Lowe, and Eric Taylor at notable venues and folk clubs like the 24th St Theater Sacramento, Bazaar Cafe and Red Devil in SF, the Bedford Globe in London, and the Red Lion Folk Club in Birmingham (UK) to name a few.

Cover art for Lee's Hit Single, That's The Way It's Gonna Be January 10 was Lee's Birthday. On the occasion of his 60th birthday, the City of San Francisco declared Lee Mallory Day in recognition of his contributions to music, the songwriting community and HepC prevention. I think of him as the patron saint of singer-songwriters, though he saw himself more as a cautionary tale - take care of your body when you're young & you'll last longer. Anyway...

Alan Monasch is Bazaar's December Artist In Residence and has produced a marvelous series of concert/discussion events. I'm really honored to be sharing the bill with Alan and featured artist Joey Wolpert.

I've been wanting to do a show where I feature the unique voices of several instruments I love and Alan's invitation to perform has given me just the excuse I need to share with you how ukulele, 6-string and 12-string guitars sing to me. I may even feature the high-strung guitar - usually used in studio as a backing instrument.

Taste At The Point Long Beach - 1:00 PM
3955 N Studebaker Road
Long Beach, CA 90808
(562) 420-3393 [map]
Price: $20 Donation

When Lynda DeWitt was diagnosed with stage-four breast cancer, she asked Breast Cancer Angels for help during her treatment to pay for food and housing. More than a decade later, DeWitt said the organization saved her life.

Returning the favor has become her mission. That’s why DeWitt is organizing the fifth annual Taste at the Point — with a new cardboard castle building contest added this year — on Saturday to benefit the nonprofit Breast Cancer Angels.

At Grace First Presbyterian Church, the fundraiser will showcase cuisine from area restaurants and include raffles, silent auctions, live entertainment and a bazaar with craft booths. Proceeds from the event help assist women, men and children impacted by breast cancer who need help paying for the essentials, such as food, clothing, medicine and housing.

The volunteer-operated Breast Cancer Angels was founded by Faye Dietiker in 2002 and is based in Cypress. Dietiker’s goal was to create an organization that operated entirely on volunteers that would give away 100% of the money raised to in-need women in treatment and their families, said Breast Cancer Angels Marketing Director Caitlin Cutt.

“All of the money raised here stays here, and 100% of the donations go right to the people who need it,” Cutt said, adding that Taste at the Point organizers hope to raise about $15,000 this year.

The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday, May 3, at Grace First Presbyterian Church (3955 Studebaker Road). For a donation of $20, visitors will get samples of food from Blackbird Café, Buono’s Authentic Pizza, The Dog House, Gladstone’s Long Beach, Glory Days Grill,Handy’s Smokehouse Delicacies, La Taverna, Long Beach Creamery, M’Dear’s, Mezza Mediterranean Grill, Original Roadhouse Grill and Sweet & Saucy Shop. There also will be vendor booths, a children’s craft area and live music and dance performances.

Taste at the Point also will feature a booth where people can find out more information about Breast Cancer Angels or donate to the cause. For details or to purchase taste tickets in advance, visit www.tasteatthepoint.org.

There are numerous performers and I'm honored to play a guest slot and sit in with the Moonshine band.

Songwriter In Residence: Songwriter Secrets - 7PM
5927 California St.
San Francisco, CA [map]
Price: Donations

Songwriter Secrets - Every Tuesday this month we'll feature a songwriter who will share their songs and secret skills. This week is our last hoorah, our parting shot, our grand exit and we've hit the trifecta!

This week, meet Liz Ryder.

Liz Ryder playing guitar Liz was born in Los Angeles, California to parents who were actors and artists, but soon moved to her father's native England to a landscape "rife with folk legacy". She absorbed the medieval folk music her father played and strains of it suffuse her classically-trained music and elegant lyrics. She was a semi-finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards (2002). She has earned a M.A. in Music and currently teaches as well as composing and performing. If your ears pick up some Richard Thompson influence in her guitar work, congratulate yourself right now, because she recently opened for him on the main stage of Sidmouth Folk Festival in South West England.

Michael McNevin

Michael McNevin at the Vine, Niles, CA

A veteran of the folk scene, Michael has logged close to 20 years playing concerts across the U.S. He is a past winner of the Kerrville New-folk award in Texas, a 6-time winner of the West Coast Songwriters Association "Song Of The Year" ('91, '92, '97, '98, '05, '09). Michael owns and operates the Mudpuddle Shop in downtown Niles, CA. It's a pocket-sized venue chock full of concerts, workshops, legendary jam sessions and a display of his renowned Etch A Sketch art.

Tommy P.

Tommy P. performing at the Lost Church 9/14/13

Bringing us tales of Milpitas and beyond, Tommy P. is a songwriter with stories. His unique fingerpicking style provides a complementary voice to his vivid storytelling. Tommy engages audiences with fine writing and a deep commitment to his songs in performance. After releasing his EP, "Nowhere Now", Tommy is producing other emerging artists and playing shows around the San Francisco Bay.

I'm delighted to have this series ended by this crew with strong folk roots, great writing and wonderful humans all.

Aireene Espiritu with ukulele

This week, Aireene Espiritu, the ever-touring, ever-wonderful soulful singer on ukulele and guitar includes us in her Bay Area dates. Aireene was born in the Philippines and moved to the United States at 10 years old. Influenced by listening to Alan Lomax's field recordings from the South and growing up listening to her uncles' Filipino folk guitar fingerpicking, Aireene's lyrics celebrate "human beings being human, stories from ghosts and the living" and weave the cultures of the old country and the new country into a third culture she generously invites us into with her songs.

Also: singer-songwriter and artist, Robin Galante Artwork by Robin Galante

Robin's lyrics overflow with whimsical wisdom. She performs with her husband Eric Pedersen, and together they weave a tasty blend of guitar, ukulele, mandolin and delicious vocal harmonies.

Mick Schaffer playing slide guitar

 Mick Shaffer

Mick fills his songs with strong characters, humor and a strong rootsy bluesy groove. The SF Examiner has rightly called Mick "a phenomenal bottle-neck blues guitarist"  who's been described as what might have happened "if Johnny Cash had been born as Joe Strummer."

More on Greater Pacific

The pining sound of pedal steel and the signature timbre of Kyle Kersten's voice are the essence of the band's sound. With the additional production of John Phinney, Greater Pacific includes plenty of what could be possible unexpected instrumentation that builds into peaks and subsides into soundscapes. Greater Pacific band

Bazaar Foundation for the Arts, Inc. is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization dedicated to supporting local Bay Area artists in the creation and public performance of original works of music, visual and spoken word arts, and to providing spaces for live performance in San Francisco.

Bazaar Foundation for the Arts was founded by Makiko and Les Wisner to serve their community and the many song-writers and young artists they have met over the years at the music and arts events held at their Bazaar Café. Understanding the challenges that many of these artists face in producing and performing their craft, they started this foundation to promote the arts in the San Francisco community.

The opening of Bazaar Café in 1998 was a response to the need for more venues to exhibit and perform new and original works of art and music. The Foundation aims to further this mission by expanding the opportunities available in the Bay Area through a number of programs that offer much needed support to artists at all stages of their careers.
